"True Love Is Violent" is a song by Allie X which is featured as the tenth track on her third studio album, CollXtion II.
Background[]
"True Love Is Violent" was originally written in early 2014 at a writing camp for Madonna's thirteenth studio album, Rebel Heart. X stated that after she wrote the song, she "fell in love with it right away" and "claimed it for [her]self".[1] Shortly after it was written, the song was shown to Katy Perry who tweeted its song title on March 19, 2014.[2] The song was planned to be included on CollXtion I in 2014, but it was ultimately scrapped from the project for unknown reasons. In 2019, a former team member of X's shared a draft tracklist of the EP which included "True Love Is Violent" as the sixth and closing track.[3]
After being scrapped from CollXtion I, the song was later reworked to be a part of CollXtion II. A 2014 version of the song labelled as "Mix 2" leaked via SoundCloud on December 12, 2016.[4] Following this, the album version was previewed in March 2017 after X revealed the CollXtion II Hotline phone number. When fans called the number, the pre-chorus and chorus could be heard from the other end of the line. The album version was officially released on June 9, 2017.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
The surface of the water is serene
But what goes on below?
Hungry current sucking at your feet
It won't let go
[Pre-Chorus]
Tossed 'til we're capsized
Battered and bruised
Say it's the last time
We know the truth
[Chorus]
Don't know what you got until it's gone
Don't know what is right until it's wrong
Heaven could fall and angels swarm
But Hell is ours to face
Ah-oh, true love is violent
Ah-oh, true love is violent, violent
[Verse 2]
Stirring in the sugar cubes of salt
Pollute to purify
Drowning in my body, mind and thoughts
My mouth is dry
[Pre-Chorus]
Tossed 'til we're capsized
Battered and bruised
Say it's the last time
We know the truth
[Chorus]
Don't know what you got until it's gone
Don't know what is right until it's wrong
Heaven could fall and angels swarm
But Hell is ours to face
Ah-oh, true love is violent
Ah-oh, true love is violent, violent
[Bridge]
After the storm, after the rain
I'm juvenile, I'm born again (Ah-ah-ah)
[Chorus]
Don't know what you got until it's gone
Don't know what is right until it's wrong
Heaven could fall and angels swarm
But Hell is ours to face
Ah-oh, true love is violent
Ah-oh, true love is violent, violent
