Background & Theme[]
On November 6, 2019, Allie announced the release of the song in all her social media alonside a link to presave it on music platforms. A day later, she posted a snippet of the song counting the time to release.[1]
In this song, Allie talks to us about trying to fit into society knowing that you are an outsider, a person who is not going to act like a normal person because it is not. You try to fit in to feel more comfortable and not feel weird, which makes you end up faking or pretending and losing yourself as you are.
On release day, Allie posted the following about the song on her social media:[2]
“ | It’s hard to explain why exactly Regulars means so much to me. The lyrics say it better then I could ever in my own explanation, but I’ll try… Regulars is about trying to reintegrate into society when you’ve been an outsider all your life. Trying to fit in when you clearly never will. Wanting to fade into the background but also wanting so badly to be seen. I have felt, at most points in my life, like I want to fit in and ‘be good’ for the sake of myself and the sake of others, but it’s never that simple. This song is a musing on giving up who you are, and how ‘fun’ that might be. It is sarcastic and very truthful at the same time. ‘Oh what a feeling!
Hanging off a building / With the regulars‘ |

Allie spoke about the song in her track-by-track rundown on Apple Music:[3]
“ | This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written; it’s like my torch song. It’s how I’ve always felt. It’s a very universal theme: There’s a lot of people that feel like outsiders. Like, I know how to fake it, I know how to please people, but I don’t feel understood a lot of the time. That applies to the music industry; it also applies to all the boys that never thought I was attractive in high school. I had a real visual in my mind when I was writing that one—when I sing, ‘What a feeling/Hanging off a building,’ I pictured people going to their nine-to-five jobs in their corporate suits and they’re just there hanging from skyscrapers by the edge of their fingertips, smiling and thinking, ‘I might just let go.’ | ” |

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Out in public
'Cause I learned a new trick now
See, I'm laughing
Don't I look so happy now? Oh, wow
[Refrain]
I'm with the regulars
I'm with the regulars
[Verse 2]
Now it's easy
They believe when I pretend, pretend
We've been worried
We just wanna see you win, see you win
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm with the regulars
I'm with the regulars
Just like I never was
Just like I never was
And I'm outside
[Chorus]
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) I got my reasons
Hanging off a building
[Verse 3]
I walk a wire
I can't even see the ground, see the ground
Thank you, mother
So lucky that I'm balanced now, ah
[Pre-Chorus]
I'm with the regulars
I'm with the regulars
Just like I never was
Just like I never was
But I'm outside
[Chorus]
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) I got my reasons
Hanging off a building
[Post-Chorus]
(Ah)
With the regulars (Ah)
[Bridge]
(With the regulars) The regulars
(With the regulars) With the regulars
(With the regulars) With the regulars
[Chorus]
With the regulars
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) Oh, what a feeling
Hanging off a building with the regulars
(Ah-ha) I got my reasons
Hanging off a building
[Outro]
With the regulars (Ah)
With the regulars (Ah)
